Fjällräven | Liking
Who are they: The story behind Fjällräven began in 1950 when Åke Nordin, a 14-year-old boy from Sweden, was not satisfied with his current solution for carrying and took matters into his own hands. Not everyday a 14yr old starts their own bag company…

Our Favourite Wheeled Bags
Note: For a higher resolution image of the above, click [HERE].
Traveling has become a major part of our lives – whether for a holiday, a business trip, or discovering the world. Few of us take the same length trip each time, so choosing appropriate luggage is no easy task. There’s loads to consider, and with the way excess weight charges are skyrocketing, weight is more important than ever.
With that in mind we have pulled together a list of bags we think tend to cover most areas you need to think about when traveling, with factors like weight, material, mobility, and more…

The Travel Wallet
In all our years of traveling one of my pet hates was the juggling of my travel documents – passport, boarding pass, anything that refers to where I’m going, etc. It took until a recent trip where one of my travel buddies pulled out what, at first glance, looked like the guiness world record for Costanza wallets, for me to realise there was answers out there.

Some really cheap (but really good) bags
Backcountry.com is a pretty neat online retailer for all sorts of outdoor gear. They’ve had an outlet concept for awhile, which has recently jumped back to our attention with a fancy rebranding to The Department Of Goods.
After spending an embarrassing amount of time drooling through it, we’ve picked out a few of the gems…

Dispelling some common air travel myths
Bruce Schneier is one of those specialists that have transcended their area of expertise. An expert in cryptography, internet security and now security as a broader issue, his commentary has the kind of common sense that Seth Godin brings to marketing.
His blog covers loads, but the bits we love the most are his musings on travel and aviation security. Security Theatre is a term he has coined to describe “security measures that make people feel more secure without doing anything to actually improve their security.”
Carrying better is almost always about facilitating some form of travel, so we thought it would be good to start dispelling some of the myths that travelers have about security. Here’s a few of those memes that really should be shot down…

"This is a bag you'd want to sleep in" Bowoo
Have you ever looked for a cover or a case for your precious guitar, perhaps during your early rock years?
No matter how long those years were, it’s been pretty darn hard to find something practical, and that looks as nice as the beauty it carries. A product that makes sense and still stays elegant. Most of the covers are little more than a guitar shape with a front pocket. Bonus if they have padded walls. They never seem to have reached the sense a guitar case should give. You are a real musician! Instead those covers would bring even Clapton right back to his school years saying, ” he is still learning”…
Well so far Bowoo has taken the step to change all that, crafting some quite interesting guitar covers. A Brooklyn brand, refusing to accept that in a place counting more musicians and designers than anywhere else, no one came up with a decent cover. So they did. The Bowoo guitar bag is simple, elegant, quite well finished with a feel of craftsmanship. Great details are probably the main feature of their bags. Not a revolution, it is just right. Straps can be better and could use the messenger bags innovations in shoulder pads.
On top of all they give two percent of every purchase to charity focusing on helping the planet. How good is that!

The start of March was a pretty crazy week for me, with loads of great experiences and inspiration. I figured there might be a few bits of random interest in there, so here’s some industry and carry thoughts emerging from it…

Ummm, can’t say I’m too sure about which category this fits into – Carry vs Weird. But hey, whatever tickles your fancy right?
Anyway, Eastpak, makers of bags and other assorted carry items have teamed up with Quinze and Milan, makers of fine furnitue, to produce the ‘Built To Resist’ Collection. Now if you’re like me you will need some to catch you breath from laughing before having a good look at the piece above…

Simple is kinda nice…
For all our love of feature rich bags, there’s times when the Ikea bag or a simple wrap forms the perfect carry aid.
So here’s a little look in to the timeless art of Furoshiki – that beautiful Japanese way to carry things using a simple fabric square.
After the jump…

If you want large version of the image above click [HERE]
There’s some great backpacks around, but there’s also a lot that suck really badly. We thought we’d pull together a spread of packs that we rate – they work well, they look appropriate for their intended use, and they should help you get out and enjoy new experiences.
We wanted to narrow this list down a little, so we’ve chosen our favourite versatile packs. A great all-rounder is not easy to do, so there will still be some compromises. We’ve arranged them from more of a work focus, to more of an activity focus. Just pick where you best fit.
Quality = Fitness for purpose
These backpacks should all:
- Work well enough from the office to the outdoors: They’ll carry a mix of items, and look appropriate across a variety of environments (unless you are in full suit city).
- Carry your tech: They have pockets for all those modern devices, generally including a laptop (we let you know if they need an additional sleeve).
- Deal well with travel: Travel requires a pack that can expand for a jacket or contract for an overhead bin. You need to stash food without squashing it and digital toys without scratching them. The best travel packs can open wide on their backs for packing on a hotel bed.
More discussion on the backpacks after the jump…

Ideas to keep your laptop hidden from dodgy scoundrels
Camera bags used to be very obviously camera bags. That was fine for shooting weddings, but it was a pretty loud request to be mugged anywhere else. The best selling bags now look like pretty normal bags. That’s a good thing.
The same philosophy of hiding your valuables has hit laptop cases and bags in a big way, with some pretty creative expressions. We thought we’d find a few of the more fun ways to keep your laptop your laptop, rather than funding for someone elses drug habit.

Modern Retro - Style first
Les Ateliers Ruby – Stunning motorcycling helmets.
Why we like it: Too many companies make too many things. Ruby concentrate on a narrow product area, and absolutely nail it. This is French luxury the way it should be.
Who else might like it: You don’t have to straddle horsepower to like these helmets. Wear one to the milk-bar.

I would love 1/20th the talent of Morgan
A great eye, and a great lifestyle!
Why we like it: We secretly wish we had this much talent at such a young age. Morgan Maassen has a great eye with a strong style, and he plays in some dreamy locations.
Who else might like it: Lovers of ocean, surf and travel photography

It's like the eternal struggle between good & evil – passengers & airlines
The search for better luggage scales
I have an old butchers carcass scale at home. A big, rusty, mechanical beast of a scale set with a menacing hook dangling from the bottom.
While there’s some nice sentiments associated with the thing, I realise it’s not quite the optimum way to weigh luggage before a trip. And I’m sure not taking it along with me for on the go adjustments.
As airlines have sought new revenue streams, luggage is being attacked in earnest. As such, we need travel companies to start offering better solutions for fliers to weigh and adjust (on the fly).
The above pictured solution from Digigrip (via NOTCOT) looks like a step in the right direction, but lacks much sophistication.

A clean & well ordered bag site
Rushfaster – Bags you won’t find on everyone else
Why we like it: Living mostly in Australia, we usually look with envy at all the great businesses IN OTHER COUNTRIES. We’re only little, so mostly we get ignored. Rushfaster are good, on a global level. They have a great site with easy navigation and loads of bags, wallets, and carry product.
Who else might like it: Crew scoping a new carry item.
