If backs bend, then why are packs flat?

Computers used to fill buildings. Then just rooms. Then just desks. Now most computers are laptop or pocket sized.
So how does this change things in the world of carry? Well, you can now carry your computer, and many people do…
But there’s a catch…

Defying convention | Bags that take a different approach
Most crew start their bag research knowing they are after a backpack, messenger, tote, or some other specific type of bag. Heck, we even try and help you narrow to the ‘right’ category, with posts like Backpack or Messenger, trying to cut your mass of options down to something more manageable.
But what about the bags that don’t fit any one category? The bags that defy categorisation, and in doing so, defy convention?
So here’s a few Jonathon Livingston Seagulls*, those bags that don’t want to be defined by the traditional way to carry them. These are a sort of carry trail-blazers, trying to open your mind and your carrying freedom…

This is one of those bags that you see pop up everywhere, reaching icon status with that broad silhouette and bling seat belt buckle. And as with any iconic bag, there are also reviews everywhere. The internet has filled it’s silicon warehouse with dissections and discussions about the Metropolis, looking for insights into a seriously long lasting (sales and production wise) bag.
After owning one for almost 2 years now, I thought it was my turn to try and go a little deeper than those other reviews, in the way that Carryology encourages…

Road Tested | Chrome Ivan roll-top Part 1&2
We’ve had this backpack for some time, so thought we’d roll parts 1 & 2 of the road test together. We can’t promise that this will make the review twice as good, but we’ll try…
The Ivan is one of three sizes in Chrome roll-top backpacks – there’s also a smaller Pawn, and the larger Sultan. They are all built the same way, just with a different scale applied.
This is a great bag, and also one that helped kick-start a new style of backpack. So here goes with our thoughts on it…

With the burgeoning electric car market, large investments in wind power, sustainable farming and the like, there is no shortage of opportunities to be better global citizens. What surprises me, however, is that only until recently did we really start to take notice of a solution that is so simple, effective, and applicable to each and every one of us. Let’s talk about what you use to carry your groceries from the supermarket, your local co-op, or the Farmer’s market on Saturday mornings…

Hilton Tent City x Baileyworks
So this is almost like a mix of a couple of posts, but also a post that is unique to itself. Confused yet? I am.
We have spoken about Tent City and we have shown you the review the Reverend gave us on the Baileyworks Super Pro. So while it’s pretty easy to become a jaded old cynic about branded co-ops getting released, this one between Hiltons and BW is pretty cool – it’s a BW SuperPro, in small, medium or large- each tricked out with some nifty one-off features.

Carry Retailers | Hilton’s Tent City
There are SOOOOO many bags in this world. Gazillions of them. And most of them are kinda crap. So while we try and help you navigate the clutter online, if you need to try a bag out in the flesh a good bricks and mortar retailer is invaluable .
Today we wanted to have a quick look at one of those retailers…

What’s in your bag?
Bags are funny things – you can fit entire wardrobes into some backpacks, yet can’t fit more than your laptop and a few magazines into others.
Items in your bag are likes socks in the washing, you never know where something has gone if you can’t find it. Especially when you swear black an blue that you put into your bag. Then, 3 months later, you find it under that old sandwich – which is a now clean shade of green.
I had to empty my bag today, in preparation of a new one, so I thought I’d share what I normally carry around in my work pack…

Road Tested | Mission Workshop Vandal | Part 2
Mid test summary
So I’ve been using the Vandal for well over a month now, with both daily ritual and interstate trips covered. It’s a great pack, and is holding up well to the abuse.
The Mission Workshop guys were awesome in sending us this pack, and also in agreeing that we shouldn’t hold back. So I want to cover both the highlights, and the areas that I think could be improved.
As always, this is an honest review of both the good and the not as good. We’re just lucky that the pack is mostly good… really good.

There are some pretty amazing people reading Carryology, and a recent comment stream turned in to some emails, which then turned into the retelling of a classic bag love affair that we really wanted to share.

Why did we not evolve with a pouch on our fronts?
Carrying a baby is so easy for kangaroos, but a right bother for we humans, and I’m suffering. I’ve been hauling our little sumo for 8 months now, and my back is over it.
So that means it’s time to get our head around baby carrying in a way that will help me, but more importantly, hopefully help others avoid some of the pain…

The 5 Best Things Happening In Bags Right Now
Bags are always an interesting topic, things are always changing, evolving and progressing at a rate of knots. Just last week we we’re talking about the things happening in the bag world with our friends at Buzz-Beast and it got us both thinking – what is happening in bags right now? Thoughts lead to ideas, ideas lead to topics, topics lead to content and the content lead itself to a guest post on Buzz-Beast.

The last ten days has seen the Flap Jack on my back at least twelve hours a day, sometimes more. We were inseparable through airport security, on the flight to Montreal, through heavy downpours, crowded trains, and countless miles of the subway and walking the city streets.
Through it all, I have been very impressed with the bag, but as with most things in life, there were also a few small shortcomings…

I’ve wanted to get my hands on a Mission Workshop pack from the moment I saw one… (cue cheesy music)
The guys that helped kick start Chrome bags have moved on and started afresh. Their Vandal and Rambler packs are roll-tops like the Chrome line-up, but with the ideas pushed further.
They’ve been good enough to send us a Vandal (the larger of the two), and we’re currently busy putting it through it’s paces…
