QWSTION 1-for-2 Weekender

QWSTION have a great tweak to a solid existing style. We got excited about it. Now we’re sharing…

The QWSTION Weekender is already a popular bag, serving as a versatile travel option that can move between work and play. A big part of the versatility came from the backpack or shoulder bag configuration option, a trait shared with several other bags. However this transition always required time-consuming rethreading and cumbersome actions, so you tended not to bother.

This update finds a wonderfully simple solution, with a central ring that allows you to hook the middle of the shoulder strap, creating two backpack straps from it. It’s fast, elegant, and doesn’t seem to compromise the strap function.

We haven’t had a chance to play with anything other than the press release, but it’s looking like a great approach. Well done QWSTION, we’re well impressed.

Post note: Yep, we’re not yet sure where the second shoulder pad goes when in single strap form. But that feels solvable and small in importance…

Comment on key carry. I have been doing this simple hang inside your pocket key ring for years. The weight of the keys is gone, and for the most part you don’t even know they are there.
I have a simple brass snap ring that I attach my split key ring too, and I snap it to one of my belt loops, and slide it into my pocket. great idea, and a little bit cheaper. If I was pick pocket, I’d have that dudes keys in two seconds.

So, two big problems with realism in the last picture. First, the vertical cliff of liquid water is a dead giveaway for photo manipulation.

But wait! Obviously this is a modified-gravity situation that the bag is marketed for. Otherwise, there’s no way that 80 lb model would be standing up straight holding the huge, fully packed bag. =)

I had a play with the new system and its got me balancing on 2 thoughts.

    1. Its great: It reduces the weight of the bag with 30%. Which is something that is great. Its awesome how QWSTION keep improving their bags with travellers in mind, whilst keeping the bags good looking.

    2. Not too sure: What I loved about the old bags is that the backpack system was always inside, i.e. you can loose it or forget it at home. With this system I can totally see myself not having the strap on me when I need it the most.

That’s a fine-looking bag. I wonder how comfortable it actually is in backpack mode. I get that making the conversion really simple is the point, but it looks like the load might be a little weird with the straps meeting at a single point.

Any chance Carryology could do a roundup of convertible bags? I’m especially interested in the backpack-to-briefcase conversion, but it’s always interesting to see how designers finesse the transition from one mode of carry to another.

I would also love to see a convertible bag roundup. would also like to know when this tweak to the qwstion design is expected to show up on the market? i came yay close to buying a weekender this weekend, but the company’s site currently shows the old configuration.

@jeff: on qwstion.com, the weekender washed grey, washed black and dust can be ordered with the new 1for2 system. same for all office bags and daypacks (except red wine).
