The History of Luggage

by , September 1, 2014

Love it or loathe it, luggage is an almost indispensable part of traveling (unless your trip is very short or you’ve reached a higher plane of minimalist traveling efficiency). Sleek and compact rollers that are a pleasure to use; bedraggled bags that just refuse to go down and you can’t help but grudgingly respect; convenient carry-on; check-in beasts that can handle anything baggage handlers can throw at them – the world of luggage is amazingly diverse.

However, we tend to think of travel carry in terms of recent developments – what’s new this year, what’s soon to be released – but people have been carrying luggage in some form or another for centuries. In order to shed light on significant developments in the history of luggage Case Luggage has created an Era of Luggage timeline which charts the earliest known wheeled luggage up to imagining what the future may hold for travel carry design.

You can check out the timeline below. Plus, if you’re aware of any historical highlights in the development of luggage which should be added to the timeline (and we suspect our very knowledgeable readers will 😉 ), you can get involved by submitting your info to: historyofluggage@gmail.com
