The very last of “Firefly Collection”?
As promised, more patches! This Firefly Rare Camo Collection in particular took quite a bit of extra effort, but we think it was definitely worth it now that we finally have them in hand.

Introducing… a collection of rare camouflage!

P05: Firefly M81 US Woodland
P06: Firefly M90 Swedish
P07: Firefly Tigerstripe
P08: Firefly DPCU Auscam

Firefly Rare Camo collection inspiration

Plaid, a pile of leaves, a tiger in the grass, and jellybeans?
What could all of this mean?

This was the clue we shared in our private community group on Facebook, Carryology Classified. Each photo represents a camo pattern and each pattern would be utilized on its own Firefly patch design.
You’ll find the answers to each photo clue in the sections below.

The Final Release of the Firefly Collection?

Yep, that’s the official plan. We’ll still do more patches, of course. But the Firefly Collection will now be complete with these final four designs in the Firefly Rare Camo collection. The “Firefly” designation is determined by a laser-cut nylon upper and a lower made from orange 3M Diamond Grade DG3 Reflective.

Because of these being the last pieces to complete the Firefly puzzle, we wanted these last 4 to be very special. For the first 4 patches in the Firefly Collection, we went all 500D Cordura nylon: in an iconic black colorway (P01– SOLD OUT) and then 3 patterns from the incredible MultiCam® camouflage family (P02, P03, and P04 – SOLD OUT). Of course, there’s an entire world of camo patterns out there… from different times in history and from different countries/regions across the globe. We compiled a dream list of our 4 favorite patterns, regardless of their era, location, or difficulty to find them.

Well, that’s easier said than done. You’ll notice it’s been 2 months since our last patch release. That’s because we’ve been busy digitally searching warehouses around the world for NOS (new old stock) rolls or scrap yardage of these rare fabric patterns that have been hiding away or that time has forgotten. Thanks to some great friends and a whole lot of digging, we were able to find some of these tucked away. Special shout-out to a great friend of Carryology, Spencer McDonald, who secured us some genuine Auscam (his own!) from Australia. Long story short, as simple as this may seem… this was no small task.

P05: Firefly M81 US Woodland

M81 US Woodland (AKA “God’s Plaid) was created for the United States Armed Forces all the way back in 1981. For many, this is the ultimate camouflage pattern, hence its mighty and bold nickname. This is the camo most of us know from cult classic 1990s movies and even on toy action figures. Simply put, this is one of the most iconic camouflage patterns in the history of camouflage.
Photo clue answer: Plaid = “God’s Plaid” = Nickname for M81.

Carryology Morale Patch
P06: Firefly M90 Swedish

M90 (AKA “the leaf pile”) hails from our friends in the north, the Swedes. Used today by the Swedish Armed Forces, it was actually developed in the 1970s for military vehicles. Since then, its fractured iconic look has been scaled down and copied widely on a commercial level. It was only last year, in 2020, that the country of Sweden actually copyrighted the design, making it uniquely their own… and even more difficult to source.
Photo clue answer: Pile of leaves = “The leaf pile” = Nickname for M90.

NOTE: Due to its rarity and difficulty sourcing this fabric, there is an extremely limited amount available!

Carryology Morale Patch
P07: Firefly Tigerstripe

Tigerstripe is a unique and mysterious one. Its history isn’t quite as linear or clear as some of the other official government-approved armed forces patterns. Tigerstripe can be traced back to the French military who fought in Vietnam. After they left, the Vietnamese military adopted the pattern. Later, the US sent in advisors who worked with the Army of the Republic of Vietnam, who were wearing the pattern. Because of this partnership, certain groups in the US military were approved to wear this camo. But, it was only the best of the best: SEALs, Green Berets, and other elite forces. It became synonymous with “badass”.
Photo clue answer: A tiger in tall grass = Well, that one is easy… Tigerstripe.

Carryology Morale Patch
P08: Firefly DPCU Auscam

DPCU Auscam (or “jellybean camo” or “hearts and bunnies”) is a special one for us. Auscam is short for “Australian camouflage” as it’s used by, you guessed it… Australian Defence Force. Carryology was founded in Australia, after all. Think, if M81 is the iconic camo pattern for the US, this is the Australian equivalent. The Disruptive Pattern Camouflage Uniform was developed in the 1970s and has since been replaced by the modern MultiCam pattern, leaving this one longingly loved and remembered.
Photo clue answer: Jellybeans = “Jellybean camo” = Nickname for Auscam.
