Best EDC 2019
The Best EDC should slip easily into your daily setup, balancing a compact form that’s convenient to carry with attractive aesthetics and useful functionality…
Leatherman have been in the multi-tool business for 35 years and are one of the industry’s most prominent and respected names. Their Free series builds on the brand’s extensive expertise, taking multifunctional EDC to the next level.
Five years in the making, the Free series utilizes magnetic architecture to allow tools to open smoothly and effortlessly. And with all of the tools located externally, you get easier and quicker access. The series is made in Portland, Oregon using stainless steel and glass-filled nylon. And it’s backed by Leatherman’s 25-year guarantee, so you can feel confident putting these multi-tools to work day in and day out.
Well suited for EDC use is the T series (for Tool). The most compact series in the Free lineup, it ditches the pliers for a solution 3.6 inches long and weighing between 3.3 and 4.3 oz. But don’t let the compact size fool you. You’re getting a generous dose of functionality in a form that slips easily into a pocket.
Looking for more versatility? Then the P-Series is the plier-based wing of the FREE line. Kitted out with all the goodies (19 tools, P2 / 21 tools, P4)) that fans of the Wave, Surge, and Charge look for, but with greater efficiency and ease of use.
With its smooth, quick access and multifunctionality, the Free series is a valuable and innovative addition to a variety of EDC setups. And with Leatherman’s industry-leading build quality it’s a solid investment too. Huge praise, Leatherman!
These are the pieces that just missed out, and in most cases, by the smallest of margins. To them, we award a High Commendation. The below were of outstanding quality, displaying fine craftsmanship and design flair. With honor, we bow our heads in the utmost respect and kudos. If this were a dais, they’d be biting their teeth into silver medals – a feat not to be overlooked. And we’re sure they’ll be back, to take it one notch higher, next year.
Illumination is an important asset to have in your daily setup. And when it comes to a great balance of useful lighting in an easily portable format, the Mini Turbo MKIII is hard to beat. Built for throw, the larger head and Cree XPL-HI LED achieves 20 meters longer reach than the MKII. The Cree XPL-HI LED has a neutral tint with 4500K color temperature and 75+ CRI.
The flashlight also has a redesigned user interface to bring consistency across the Foursevens line (Prometheus Lights acquired Foursevens in 2018). There are six configurations to choose from, allowing you to tailor your illumination to different needs and environments.
Additionally, the design welcomes fuller machined grooves for weight savings and a better grip. Plus with its magnetic tailcap you can benefit from flexible mounting options too. A fine effort, Prometheus Lights!
When you find that special EDC pen that not only looks good but feels good in use too, you want to hold onto it. But sometimes your writing needs will vary, likely resulting in having to resume the hunt for another pen. Well, Big Idea Design think you can do things differently. So they created the Ti Click EDC Pen. One pen that accepts over 100 different refills, allowing you to adapt to different writing needs while still enjoying your trusty EDC pen.
The design features an adjustable length to accommodate a broad range of refill cartridges. And it also has an auto adjusting collet to get rid of tip wiggle.
It’s machined from solid Grade 5 titanium alloy and features a custom brass alloy and titanium click mechanism. And for carry convenience, it comes with a titanium pocket clip with proper tension for secure on-the-go portability. Tough, stylish and adaptable for a wide range of writing needs, this is a smart pick for an EDC pen. Great job, Big Idea Design!
