Third Annual Carry Awards :: Best Check-In Results
Regular readers of Carryology will know the love/hate relationship we’ve had with spinner luggage. While the four-caster format requires less energy and improves agility, it has traditionally been compromised by tiny wheels that trip up easily, and weight and bulk that we could do without.
The Samsonite Cubelite was the first large-capacity spinner that we felt nailed the format. It found the right balance between weight, agility and durability, and it won us over to the potential of spinners. The downside has been that the finish of the case felt a touch underdone for an expensive bit of kit. Plastic trim and an undersized zip just took the shine off an otherwise great suitcase.
So how can the new Lite-Cube DLX be better when the cost is greater? Because the value is better, and it’s value that matters most to us.
The DLX has taken the bones of the updated Lite-Cube and finished them in leather details and fancier finishes. So for a small amount extra, you now get a case that looks and feels like the amount you paid for it.
Whether you want the silver and tan bling, or the murdered black colorway, you’ll feel like a million bucks whether or not you’re up the pointy end of the plane. This is a great suitcase.
These are the pieces that just missed out, and in most cases, by the smallest of margins. To them, we award a High Commendation. The below were of outstanding quality, displaying fine craftsmanship and design flair. With honour, we bow our heads in the upmost respect and kudos. If this were a dias, they’d be biting their teeth into silver medals, while their flags were hoisted into the horizon – a feat not to be overlooked. And I’m sure they’ll be back, to take it one notch higher, next year.
With its pared-back profile that significantly reduces the risks of snagging – from branches to baggage carousels – Arc’teryx’s Carrier Duffle is a sleek piece of kit for travelers wanting gear without all the bells and whistles. Light in weight but extremely tough and highly water-resistant, the bag can be carried using the top, bottom or side grab handles or alternatively with the removable and adjustable shoulder straps. In addition, the bag’s reflective white interior makes it easy to distinguish the contents quickly. If you need to haul a lot of gear in a trusty piece of carry, this bag will see you right.
The Ortlieb Duffle RS is an accomplished piece of carry that offers a range of benefits to travelers – weather resistance, durable construction, plenty of space, plus the option to carry it as a backpack or roll it thanks to the rugged wheels. The bag also incorporates an interior and exterior pocket, along with daisy chains for attaching extra items if needed. Great for urban and outdoor settings alike, this is a solid choice for check-in luggage.
