Inside Snow Peak Brooklyn
A Japanese lifestyle and Outdoor Brand, Snow Peak are favourites of not only the staff at Carryology, but the carry community at large. Sleek lines, thought provoking designs, and supreme functionality are at the forefront of Snow Peak’s design philosophy, and that is epitomised in their new flagship store in Brooklyn. After visting their PNW HQ in Portland a few years ago, we stopped by to take a peek at their East Coast home.
From the moment you enter the Snow Peak store, the spirit of adventure is apparent. Tastefully designed custom fixings adorn the walls while in this store, you’ll find two fledged campsites to rest your weary feet.
Snow Peak started in 1958, and, as many outdoor brands start, it was born from a place of frustration. Yukio Yamai spent much of his time on the mountains of his home town in the Niigata Prefecture. Swiftly he became frustrated with the quality of climbing and outdoor gear that he was having to to use. He founded his own equipment company, that we now know as Snow Peak. You can find out more about Snow Peak’s history here.
Nowadays, Snow Peak caters for the full outdoor experience. Notably, it also has something for everyone, regardless of their expertise in climbing, hiking, or camping. Snow Peak’s philosophy is shaped around community, and that is clear in their product lines. With communal tents, shared cooking spaces, and customisable cookware being some of their flagship products.
After a short time in store it is clear that these are more than just products, these are tools to help the people live a fulfilled and connected lifestlye. You won’t find disposable or limited use products at Snow Peak, instead you’ll find industry leading materials such as titanium and takibi that are fused with timeless Japanese style. Below, we’ve selected our five favourite items for the discerning Carryologist.
A staff favourite at Carryology, Snow Peak’s collection of titanium flasks are a simple, timeless way to upgrade your EDC. Whichever style you choose, it’ll come with a handy funnel to make sure you don’t spill any precious goods, along with a drawstring pouch for storage. These flasks look better with each use and also make a great gift!
This stainless steel grill is at the heart of of how Snow Peak envisages the outdoors, and more importantly how it should be shared. This portable and modular set can be a folded down small in its native form, or it can be built up to a full feeding station for the masses with a whole array of additional attachments. This kit can be built up over years of use and adventures. It also doubles as an excellent portable firepit. This is a Snow Peak Icon.
This partnership with blanket masters Rumpl is a perfect example of Snow Peak’s sense of community and collaborating with experts in their field. This blanket is a step up from the usual, as it provides the ability to be worn as a cape (thanks to a nifty little clip) and most importantly, is made with Snow Peak’s flame resistant Takibi fibres. Perfect after a long day on the mountains, and with colours inspired by Snow Peak Heritage, this is the blanket to rule them all. Oh, and did I mention the insulation is made from post consumer waste? A win-win all round.
The Titanium Aurora bottle has been one of my personal favourite carry items over the last two years. Weighing in at an impossibly light 5.2oz, and with walls at a featherweight 1mm this has come with me everywhere, the world over. The titanium leaves no taste, so beverages are as intended. If vacuum insulation isn’t a top priority, it’s hard to look at anything else. An excellent blend of function, aesthetics, and performance, it’s a real keeper. There’s a reason both this, and their insulated milk bottle, were in our top picks for water bottles!
Snow Peak are just masters of outdoor accessories, they also have an excellent collection of apparel too. The Thermal Boa Fleece Jacket is a 100% recycled polyester fleece jacket that is lightweight and brethable. This relaxed fit fleece is a perfect every day layer and is a great campsite piece too. Coming in three different colours to suit any palette, this logo free and understated fleece is a winner. Adorned with a few simple pockets, a two way zipper, and drawstrings at the hood and hem it’s comfort and convenience all around.
Snow Peak continue to evolve and refine their style and products, while somehow remaining classic and true to their heritage roots. With this new and improved hub in America’s biggest city, we can’t wait to see what they showcase next!
