The James Brand Palmer

Best new gear - The James Brand Palmer

The Portland, Oregon designers at The James Brand just dropped their latest offering, the Palmer. This time, they turned their focus on the venerable utility knife. An upgrade to the lowly box cutter, the Palmer comes in six different colorways via its aluminum handles. It measures just 4.1″ x 1.5″ and an impressive 0.4″ thin. The primary focus the team had when designing the Palmer was ease of operation and blade changes. They nailed both points as there is a smooth blade action when deploying or retracting. And they implemented a patent-pending mechanism for tool-free blade release when slid into the center position.

Weighing just 2.5 ounces and small enough to slip into your coin pocket, this is a great solution for anyone who needs to open small packages or just needs a utility blade in their everyday carry.

Osprey Zealot and Mutant Climbing Packs

Osprey Zealot and Mutant Climbing Packs

Known for their backpacking bags, folks sometimes forget that Osprey makes some incredible climbing packs. Case in point, they just released two new lines: the Zealot and Mutant. First up, the Zealot consists of a 45L and 30L bag as well as the Chalk Bucket and Chalk Bag accessories. The Zealot series represents Osprey’s first packs specifically designed for the rock climbing gym (but they also work equally well for crag climbers). The Zealot packs feature an EVA-molded back panel and HDPE framesheet. Inside, the Zealot features compartments to keep chalk and sweaty climbing shoes separate from your daily essentials and strategically placed zip pockets to stow additional gear.

The Mutant series was created for Nepalese mountaineer and Osprey Ambassador Nimsdai “Nims” Purja MBE and his team who were the first to complete a winter summit of K2 without supplemental oxygen. This line is designed for technical alpine-specific adventures with its Dual ToolLocks, rope carry, snowshed back panel, glove-friendly buckles and strippable features. In addition to the 90L, the Mutant is also available in 52, 38, and 22-liter sizes. They all deliver alpine-, rock-, and ice-focused solutions for climbers.
