visvim Ballistic Backpack

The visvim Ballistic, designed by Japanese fashion royalty Hiroki Nakamura, features an instantly recognisable active silhouette, defined by the aggressively upward angled base. But then it delivers a twist with luxurious materials and a pig snout as the nod to carry heritage. This bag that few can afford has inspired dozens of designs from Lexdray to Herschel and plenty of others in between.

Rimowa Aluminium Suitcase

Every engineer knows that adding ribs to a flat structure increases its strength. But you need the right material to do it with. When Rimowa added the grooves to their aluminium cases, it not only made a rad-looking case, but also a stronger case, and almost every luggage and case brand has subsequently been inspired by the well-beaten Rimowas.

hardgraft 2Unfold

You know that whole grey felt with tan leather combo you see everywhere? And the fold-over satchel that can extend to a portrait carry? This is the godfather to both. The 2Unfold helped give smart casual a halo piece, in a style that still looks charismatic today.

Bellroy Slim Sleeve

This little slip of leather and thread helped win real traction for the slim wallet movement. It championed the idea of splitting daily cards from monthly cards. It was the first wallet we know of to use a pull-tab. Amazon is filled with imitation versions, and even the ‘before and after’ comparison shots are still replicated by almost every Kickstarter wallet since.

Louis Vuitton Neverfull

While the Goyard Saint Louis tote preceded it by a year or so, it’s the LV Neverfull that has inspired an entire industry for women’s all-rounder totes. From its introduction in 2007, the surprisingly strong (it’s a brave customer who loads it to the full 200 lbs capacity) coated canvas tote has grown into LV’s best seller. And with LV’s enormous volumes, that’s saying something. There was a time when ‘luxury’ was associated with exclusivity, with elevated prices and limited supply restricting luxury goods to only the most rarified folk. This bag broke that paradigm – keeping the elevated price, but exploding the supply constraint so it could sell to the masses. Its ubiquity has spurred every other luxury brand to release their equivalents, as well as every sub-luxury brand to try for the same.

JanSport SuperBreak

The SuperBreak is a staple across diverse urban carry spheres and was the first ‘big panel’ backpack to ever use a zipper on the main compartment. Selling in college book stores in the late 60s, it then became the quintessential ‘campus backpack.’ Then in the 90s, it was adopted by hip-hop and street culture, becoming an icon in its own right.

Freitag  F13 TOP CAT Messenger

Utilising recycled and upcycled materials is becoming increasingly popular. But decades ahead of the game were Freitag, the first to create bags from upcycled materials. Many have since followed in their footsteps, making bags from materials such as discarded sail cloth, signs, etc. But Freitag led the charge with recycled truck tarps, car seat belts and inner bicycle tubes. The F13 TOP CAT Messenger was born in 1993 in Zurich and has inspired the carry world with its environmentally-conscious approach to bag making, bagging a spot in New York’s Museum of Modern Art in the process.
