VINTED

Last year, we were fortunate enough to spend some time at KILLSPENCER’s workshop in downtown LA. While hanging out there we met two young guys, Ben and Jason, who were in the middle of doing an internship of sorts with KILLSPENCER. Fast forward 12 months and they’ve gone out and created their own brand – VINTED.

VINTED is the result of Ben and Jason’s research and development from the last couple of years, a long obsession with carry, and some time spent creating the brand. From the limited time we spent with them, they shared some great insights within carry and you could see how much they were sucking up everything they could from their time with Spencer.

The carry gear mixes a heritage vibe with some tech construction tricks like welded seams. It’s a pretty bold look, but one you should be able to carry through work or play.

We’re digging the Charlie Duffle with it’s Authentics Kuvert inspiration, feeling the Roger briefcase, and generally loving how cohesive the overall range is looking.

The interesting thing about VINTED, beyond the lovely look of the products and brand, is they have launched it via KickStarter. Yep, Kickstarter. They’ve got a goal of $30k and are almost halfway there already, with most people grabbing the pledge that will see them get a Briefcase. There’s a variety of pledges you can drop some cash on to support these guys. Check out the VINTED Kickstarter page for more.

I really like the style of these bags. There is a definite influence from their time at Killspencer, but they also have their own unique visual style.
The use of modern construction techniques and fabrics mixed with traditional materials too works perfectly.
Also the fact that the range is still nice and small and visually cohesive is a huge plus point.
Great work Vinted…I look forward to seeing your company grow.

As I said on Facebook, I’m a lot but not impressed.

The Bags simply look boring. They don’t look exciting or seem to feature some technological breakthrough which will blow your mind.

I just don’t see the justified price tag for this one.

Also the backpack straps look like they aren’t padded at all….if you start using a backpack as an accessoir you have lost your mind. Because I cant imagine that those straps will fuck your shoulders up if you carry some weight.

As with most great design though, the devil is in the details.
What one might call boring, another may call simple, classy, and stylish.
These bags were clearly never intended to be flashy, exciting, technologically mind blowing bags.
From where I’m looking they were intended to have a classic aesthetic but not be limited to totally traditional materials or construction techniques. The use of RF welded seams is a nod to the modern, while the style and use of leather adds a classy 60s feel. They look like something Steve McQueen might have carried. :]

Pricing is always a tricky one when it comes to design such as this, because it’s not just a simple case of value for money. If it were then people wouldn’t be prepared to pay several thousand dollars for a gucci dress, which definitely doesn’t have that amount of materials and labour involved.
If somebody likes something enough, they will be prepared to pay for it.
These are not a Jansport backpack after all.
I also don’t imagine people wanting to carry large amounts of weight would be looking in this direction anyway.

I haven’t actually seen the prices for these yet, but I can’t imagine them being all that different from a lot of other classic design goods.

It’s an each to their own type of thing a with most things in life.
For me though I really like the blend of style vs tech…I think the balance looks to be about right.
