Everlane Weekender

Love it or hate it, you have to give credit to the team at Everlane for starting things off with a bang. Their famous info-graphic “Why your t-shirt costs $50” posted on their Tumbler late last year definitely piqued consumer interest and even angered some manufacturers. Like Warby Parker, Everlane is a new breed of direct to consumer company. Part manufacturer, part retailer, the company is confident it can make a line of basics, cut out the middleman, and sell it to you, for less. Business strategy aside, I was particularly interested in their newest release: The Weekender.

The bag is 100% canvas with leather detailing (in high stress areas, plus the strap). It has sports double hand straps but no shoulder strap, optional or otherwise. Apparently, this was a design consideration and from the pictures it looks like they made the hand straps longer to pull double duty on your shoulder, if needed. It comes in four colorways that only vary in the accent color and the dimensions mean it’ll fit easily in the overhead bin. They maintain separate pages for the bag on the men’s and women’s sides but from what I can see, they are identical bags.

Priced at $95 USD, The Weekender keeps with Everlane’s mantra of $100 or less. For a two-night outing, it looks like it’s the perfect size for me. What do you guys think?

I’m on the fence on this one. The minimalist in me loves the one strap length and the simple canvas, while I still find myself craving a Killspencer Weekender 2.0. I think it looks good and is probably very functional. I’d love to see one in person to understand better the feel of the bag.

  5. James says:

The Killspencer is $300-$500 more depending on materials.

I got this bag in navy. I like it except it smells HORRIBLE like the dye they use on cheap jeans (specifically, forever 21). And they shipped it in a paper bag, folded which means the bottom of the bag is creased.

Things I do like about it:

    1. the straps are long enough to go over the shoulder
    2. it stands up by itself
    3. its a big size but still managable as a duffle
    4. its lined and has an inner pocket and a small outer pocket

AJ, thanks for the follow up. I just got in a Killspencer Weekender 2.0 and I must say I’m totally pumped at the bag, beautifully constructed and perfectly sized. I was surprised at the weight, but honestly I’ve noticed that with higher quality items I’ve been buying recently that they are all heavier than I expect. I have started to associate the weight with craftsmanship.

I hope that you enjoy your weekender. They are good looking bags, I’m curious if the smell ever went away.
