Load Carrier for Labour

Design for less developed nations is incredibly difficult to do well. You can’t just transplant highly developed materials and constructions, as tech almost always requires a support and maintenance structure to keep it working. So how do you help billions of people improve the way they carry, to improve their efficiency and reduce their injuries? Vikram Dinubhai Panchal has a carry idea that just might help…

Based at the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad India, Vikram has conceived and developed a versatile carry device aimed at labourers and workers across the Indian sub-continent. Rather than using titanium, carbon fibre, or any other number of unrealistic materials, The Load Carrier goes together with bamboo and some simple steel and plastic components. It means it can be made and assembled with minimal infrastructure near to the places it is required.

It’s a versatile beast, with some clever considerations for distributing the load in several ways, depending on what you’re carrying and where. If you’d like to read more about it, the Load Carrier has just won a Core77 Design Award, so you can read up on their sweet little site.

Ando will write reviews that run for pages, he’ll never think a carry piece is fully resolved, and he’ll always call it out if it should be. Oh, and he’s a co-founder of Carryology.

Bret has just shared a clip of a Bangladeshi man carrying 22 bricks on his head without any container. It is radical, and makes you wonder why we bother with carrying devices: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xaO3Z4G4Jso
