iPad Sleeves

After running an earlier post on carrying your iPad, there’s been a massive release of new styles and ways to keep your tablet close by you. We thought it was time to re-select our favourite cases, opting for quality not quantity…

While we covered selection notes in our earlier post, we figure this stuff is important, so here it is again:

The way we see it, a good way to carry your iPad will be a flexible way. Sometimes you’ll want to throw it in your main bag, other times you’ll want to travel lean.

We’ve never been ones to put a huge shock resistant cover on our iPhones, so we don’t do that with the iPad either. If you’re after the shock and awe covers, maybe try this. For the rest of us, a good sleeve or envelope seems the best option. But there’s more to it that just that…

Do you carry a backpack, a messenger, or a tote?

If it’s a backpack or long tote, you’ll want a portrait opening for your sleeve (opening on the short edge of your iPad). This will let you remove the iPad from the sleeve without getting the whole ensemble out of your bag.

If you’re carrying a messenger or large handbag, a landscape opening (on the long edge) will give you better access.

You’ll want to avoid complicated openings (iPads are all about quick access), and any bulky closures that will get in the way of sliding your sleeve in and out.

Other than that? Just make sure it’s a sleeve you’re excited about. At the end of the day, the iPad is an emotional purchase, so you don’t want to clothe it in a cheap horror show.

Portrait Sleeves
Tuch make lovely leather goods that have a REALLY similar feel to a Billykirk design. We can’t work out who was first, or if they evolved independantly, however the Tuch stuff is sized better for carrying your tech, so we thought we’d link to that [here]

We have not gone into Vaja much with this blog, which is our stuff-up. They’ve been around, they make incredibly refined product, and their iPad cases are quite clever. We like the Leather Agenda 2:

Landscape Sleeves
Makr know their leathers, and this iPad case is verging on leather porn. Just stunning:

The supposed ‘eco-credentials’ are a bit much, however the corner zip design from Lacie gives you access in portrait or landscape modes, and the sleeve looks pretty neat (other than the dayglo green interior):

While Hard Graft have some more innovative options, it’s hard to go past the simplicity of their Heritage iPad case:

What we couldn’t find?
We’d have loved something like this knitted cover from Krochet Kids:

This is a little large and floppy, and the Case Logic version is way too precise. Maybe if Superfolk had a play…?
