Simms Fishing Pack | Specialist Carry

You gotta hand it to fisherfolk, they are a dedicated bunch. Practising this special kind of hunting, they brave extremes of location, weather and sleep to earn their way in to the best fish hide-outs.

Today, we wanted to look at the Headwaters Tech Pack, a really clever accessory to a day standing ball deep in frigid waters looking for an elusive slippery thing…

There’s lots of time to think when you’re fishing, so they are also a pretty inventive bunch. As a company, Simms seem to think more than most. They have some incredible carry product – from million pocket vests to really refined packs and water-proof bags.

Most packs are optimized for carry rather than access. If you want to grab something, you swing the pack around and put it on the ground. That’s hard to do in a river.

So the Headwaters Tech Pack has a clip on front section that can both hold key items, and also serve as a workstation. Aarn packs has done similar things for distributing heavy loads, but this is one of the neatest systems we’ve seen designed for access.

There’s all the usual hydration bladder compatibility, bungies, and organising, and each component works well as a separate bag.

Oh, and if you’re in to waist bags, they have the Grand Poobah.

    Hi,

I bought this pack last year after reading this review but unfortunately it has started to fall apart after a handful of outings. The stitching is going in two places – one of the shoulder strap attachments and around the zip on the main pocket. It looks to me to be a fault in manufacture. At the time I made the purchase, none of the Australian Simms distributors has the pack in stock so I bought it online from Cabelas. I have contacted Simms and because I bought it from US based retailer I need to ship the pack back to the US for repair/warranty service which is proving to be cost prohibitive.

Looking at the Simms website, it would seem as though this pack is no longer part of the range and instead has been replace by the Headwaters 1/2 Day Pack, which is now made from the “new 315 HT 100% Nylon Auto Airbag fabric” and features a new magnetic catch/release system for attaching the optional chest pack. Does anyone have any information about the new fabric?
