Do you have anything a little less… expensive??

Do you have anything a little less… outrageously expensive?

That’s a thought that runs through anyone’s head space when purchasing an item, a little bit cheaper would always help. It’s a question I asked today when when trying to buy a heater for the ice box I live in… Whether or not you actually ask the salesperson is a different matter entirely.

Thanks to some input from the Twitterverse, we’re realising that our price sensitivity here @Carryology is perhaps a little blunter than many others when it comes to carry goods.

While none of the Carryology contributors are really in to that whole luxury thing, we regularly spend two or three hundred on an amazing bag. But what about sub one hundred? What is on offer?

So we’re going to take a look at some sub $100 messengers and backpacks, that really nail the value part. They are still great bags, they just get by with a simpler layout or fabric. Hopefully this might help next time you go to purchase a new pack.

We are reminded of Warren Buffet when he said:
“Price is what you pay, value is what you get.”

  1. What about the Kata DR-466i? It’s an awesome versatile backpack for street photographers and can hold the 15″ MBP nice and snug.

Haha, you’ve found us out, we’re total look snobs…

The 466 is a great bag functionally, but it looks a little like a chubby school kid. Some of their other packs are way more attractive (like the Kata 3N1-22 we reviewed here: http://www.carryology.com/2010/03/29/kata-3n1-22-specialist-carry/).

And while we really wish we didn’t care about look as much, we kinda do.

      And yes, look is subjective.

      • You think so? I suppose it does now that you mention it. I’ve owned the bag for a few months now and I have to say I’m in love with it (it looks way better in person, imho). However, the Kata 3N1-22 just blew my mind. I passed on it before thinking it was just a typical sling. It will definitely be my next bag. Thanks!

Those are really good, I’d love to keep hearing about a range sub-$100 gear every now and then.

We’ll try and build it in as a more regular component.

Thanks heaps for that feedback. Let us know about anything else you’d like to see from us.

For $100 you will not, anywhere, find a better organized backpack than http://www.511tactical.com/browse/Home/All-Products/Accessories/Bags-Backpacks/RUSH-24-Backpack/D/30100/P/1:100:50000:50800:50805/I/58601 I’ve had it for months and I couldn’t ask more from a backpack, even when I climbed Mt. Washburn with it on.

If you are looking for military styling for low prices you can’t beat CheaperThanDirt.com for their large selection and bottom dollar prices. A word of caution, you get what you pay for. Their bags are made in Asia, you might get something slightly different from what’s pictured and the construction quality and materials are far from mil-spec.

I don’t know how 5.11 handles the reviews on their website, I just know it’s a great bag.

I’ve bought ammo and some other stuff from CTD. There’s no way you can get the same quality on a $25 bag as on a $125 bag, no matter where it’s from.
